Purse Inspired...

Tuesday, October 8, 2013
I broke a few nails and so I am down to shorties right now and not feeling too artsy, but that finally gives me the chance to show you a manicure that I did a while back and didn't get a chance to post. This was inspired by a photo of a purse that I somehow stumbled across online...

(source for purse image)
To create this manicure, I started out with a base of OPI A-Piers to be Tan on all nails except for the pinkie where I used OPI Don't Pretzel My Buttons. I stamped the pinkie using Gals plate GA8 and A-Piers to be Tan. For the flower on the ring finger I used OPI First Date at the Golden Gate and acrylic paint....

Yeah, my freehand could really use some help and practice, but I'm really proud of myself for trying more of it. Someday my lines will hopefully be cleaner and smoother, but I'm happy with this for now. I really like how the flower turned out...

Let me know what you think of this manicure! I love reading your thoughts on it!

P.S. You can also come say hello to me on Instagram and tell me what you think of my manis... @wackylaki

31DC2013 Day 2 - Orange

Monday, September 2, 2013
Day 2 of the 31 Day Nail Art Challenge calls for an orange manicure and I couldn't help but use some of the Zoya beauties I was swatching last week. You'll definitely be seeing more of them this week...

For this manicure I started out with the beautiful orange PixieDust Dhara. I stamped the deign from Gals plate GA34 using Essence Stamp Me! White. As you can see it is really an amazing stamping white that I reach for time and time again. I just wish it came in a bigger bottle (as with most things from Essence)...

I added a square stud to each nail with superglue, since I don't want to use a topcoat over the PixieDust. The studs I used are 2mm gold studs from The Born Pretty store. They didn't provide quite the accent I was looking for so I painted them green using Zoya Giovanna. The brilliant idea to paint rhinestones with nail polish comes from Drama Queen Nails...

Since we are on the topic of orange polishes, this is a quick comparison of textured orange lacquers that I posted on Instagram recently and thought I would share it here as well. On a side note, come say 'hi' to me on Instagram... @WackyLaki! I'm having so much fun getting to know everyone, seeing their beautiful manicures and interacting in real time!

Subtle Geometry...

Monday, July 22, 2013
This is a manicure from way, way back in April when I was first swatching and playing with the China Glaze Hologlam collection. I really wanted to try out stamping with these holos because I expected some amazing results. Although it did stamp well, the result turned was a lot more subtle than I anticipated. Of course subtlety has it's charm as well so I still enjoyed the mani...

I started out with a base of China Glaze Cosmic Dust on all except for the thumb and pinkie fingers where I used China Glaze Strap on Your Moonboots. For the stamping, I used Strap on Your Moonboots and Gals stamping plate GA46. Light blue rectangular rhinestones on the stamp-less fingers to complete the look...

Although my nails were fairly short at the time, they were still a bit too long for the Gals full nail images. There is a small gap in the stamping toward the cuticles which is not too noticeable here, but drove me nuts in real life..

P.S. I finally broke down and joined Instagram last night, so come say 'hi' and follow if you want to! There is not much there so far, but maybe there is hope for me yet... :)

OPI When Monkeys Fly Glitter Jelly Sandwich...

Friday, March 8, 2013

Happy International Woman's Day Ladies!

I am ashamed to say that I completely forgot about today's special occasion and prepared nothing appropriate to show you. Instead I would like to show you a little layering experiment with two shades from the OPI Oz The Great and Powerful collection which I showed yesterday. While swatching, I was the least thrilled about these two particular shades, but there was something about them that prompted me to experiment further. In sandwiching the two together, I changed my mind about both of them and I must say I do like the resulting look. Playing off of the name of the glitter polish, When Monkeys Fly!, I couldn't resist stamping a little monkey accent...

I started out with OPI Glints of Glinda topped with OPI When Monkeys Fly! from yesterday. As the final layer I added one coat of Glints of Glinda plus a top coat to complete the glitter sandwich. Adding this top half of the sandwich simultaneously tamed the curly glitter and reached full opacity for the base color thereby resolving my only hesitation for the two of them. I realize that is one crazy twisted train of though, but somehow it seems so logical to me...

The embedded glitter reminds me of gold coins which I think is just a perfect background to surround a little monkey. Coincidentally, I realized that I don't have too many monkey stamps, so I was happy to find one on the new Gals set. I stamped using Gals plate GA45 and China Glaze Instant Chemistry...

What do you think of this glitter jelly sandwich combination?

Sunday Stamping: Stamping and Dots

Sunday, March 3, 2013
What happens when it is 3 am, I am exhausted, but determined to come up with a manicure for today's Sunday Stamping challenge? The answer would be this manicure. The challenge was to create a "stamping and dot, dot, dots" manicure. I may taken that "dots" part a little too seriously because I couldn't stop with the dotting tool...

For the base of the manicure I used Essence Miss Universe and stamped over it with Essence A Piece of Forever using Gals plate GA26. All the dots were also added using A Piece of Forever. Wasn't quite sure what I was going for, but I kind of like the end result...

I think it reminds me of some sort of animal print... dart frog maybe?

Essence Miss Universe is a black jelly base with a strong teal shimmer. This shade is absolutely gorgeous and a must for anyone who loves dark, mysterious polishes. Application was good if applied in thin coats. Thicker coats tended to drag. I applied two coats for this manicure, but probably should have done three because I can see through some of the black jelly spots, especially in the photos...

The only thing that drives me nuts about this polish is that "new" sticker on the lid. It is really a pet peeve of mine since the sticker always outlasts the newness of the polish... It is surpassed only by "new and improved" stickers on products. To improve something there had to have been a first version and if there was a first version then it is not new... so how can you have something that is both new and improved at the same time? OK, I digress, but really... just think about it...

You can see the beautiful blue/green shimmer in the closeup. At the same time you can also see that the jelly formula didn't quite cover the tips at two coats...

Swatch Details
Brand: Essence
Collection: main
Color Name/Number: 147 Miss Universe
Number of coats: 2
Top Coat: No

I'd love to know what you think of this manicure and please pardon my rambling... it must be the lack of sleep :)

Gals Princess and Fairy Stamping Plates

Friday, March 1, 2013
I purchased the Gals Princess and Fairy stamping sets a while ago, but have not gotten around to showing them to you until now. Having finally used them for the first time for yesterday's manicure, I figured it is about time. This is also part of my bigger project to show you all the plates that I have, since I get a lot of questions about it.

Gals, a sister or sub-company of Cheeky, recently released two 25 piece sets. One is named Princess (plates GA1-25) and the other is named Fairy (plates GA26-50). Both of these have similar quality to Cheeky plates and stamp well.

I have scanned my actual plates so these are not stock photos. Click on the images to see them in full view...

Princess Set

Fairy Set

Overall I'm very pleased with the quality of these plates. They have a great variety of both geometric, girly and delicate, and small patterns. Between the two sets I had just a few small issues. In the Princess Set, my plate GA10 arrived slightly damaged and rusted making one of the images unusable. Since I ordered from Amazon, my option was to return them and reorder, but I decided it wasn't worth the hassle. In the Fairy Set, the images on plate GA44 are slightly shifted down (you can see the word "Gals" is cut off. Luckily the plate contains just smaller images all of which survived the cut. That being said, I have seen people with full size image which were cut beyond use by this type of defect. I suggest contacting either Amazon or Cheeky (depending where you purchased) for resolution if you get a damaged or defective plate plate.

All of the plates come with a protective blue cover and a paper backing to prevent cutting yourself on otherwise sharp plates. They both list the galscomsetics.com URL on the back, which is currently non-existent and not functional. The Princess Set has pink lettering...

The Fairy Set has green lettering...

Make sure to peel off the protective cover prior to using these for stamping...

Compared to the two cheeky sets, the plate size of the Gals sets is the same as the Cheeky Vibrant set (middle plate). The full size nail images are visually slightly smaller than the images on the Cheeky Vibrant set and definitely smaller than those on the larger Cheeky Summer Set...

In my opinion, the size of the full nail stamping images is the biggest downside for these two sets. If you notice in the photo above, the Cheeky plate in the middle has rectangular full size nail images with all edges straight, while the Gals and larger Cheeky plate have a curve at the bottom of the design. This curve is thought to be there to give the option of making any full size image into a french tip design. Personally I'm not a fan of that concept.

For the larger Cheeky plates this curve is not an issue since the images are significantly larger, however, for the Gals sets which are already on the smaller side, cutting into the image is an issue. This curve takes away a valuable 2mm of pattern making the images 13 by 14 mm instead of 13 by 16 mm as they could have been...

My nails currently are 14 mm in length and are often longer. At the moment I can still use these full size images as I did for this manicure, but it leaves me absolutely no wiggle room for error in placement unless I want to double stamp (and I really don't). As my nails get longer, I will be reaching for other plates to stamp with...

These plates do stamp well and I like the variety of images. I would definitely recommend them especially for anyone with shorter nails were the size of the full nail stamp is not an issue.

Both of these sets are available on Amazon.com and Cheeky-Beauty.com.

Have you tried or want to try either of these sets? What are your thoughts on them?

Born Pretty Store Studs Review

Thursday, February 28, 2013
Sometimes two colors work so perfectly together that my heart skips a beat when I see the result. That is how I feel about the combination of Barielle Blue Cotton Candy stamped with Sally Hansen Color Quick Pen in Turquoise Chrome. I was actually worried it wouldn't turn out since they looked so similar, but man am I glad to be wrong in this case...

As I mentioned already the base of this manicure is Barielle Blue Cotton Candy from the Sweet Treats collection which I showed yesterday. I stamped over it using the Sally Hansen Color Quick Pen in Turquoise Chrome and the Gals plate GA14...

This was my first time using the recently purchased Gals stamping plates and I couldn't have asked for a better outcome. It stamped perfectly...

I accented the manicure with BornPrettyStore.com studs that are available as part of an assortment wheel (Item #5003). The studs are approximately 2mm in diameter and are made out of aluminium so they are very light. They are gold plated on one side and are base metal on the back. I think these are such a fun accent...

The wheel (Item #5003), comes with a variety of different shaped all made out aluminium and plated either in gold or silver. I'm looking forward to trying out some of the other shapes, so you'll be seeing more of these in future manicures...

If you would like to purchase this or anything else form the BornPrettyStore.com, you can use the code AG5J61 for 10% off.

I'd love to know what you think of this manicure and the studs! :)
